China announced nearly 600MW of energy storage in Q3 2016

China’s deployment of energy storage looks set to continue an upward trajectory, with almost 600MW in the pipeline as of the third quarter this year.

According to figures released by the China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA), 14 new projects were announced in Q3 2016 totalling 587MW. This includes projects that are in planning stages, under construction and that have gone online in the quarter. This appears to represent a significant boost to the sector, and is a vast 586% increase on the same period of last year. Up until the beginning of the quarter, CNESA found, 170.6MW of energy storage was in operation in the country.

The bulk of this large figure is contributed by a single project, a touted 400MW supercapacitor storage station with storage duration of four hours in Guazhou County, in the northern Gansu province, a couple of hundred kilometres south of the border with Mongolia. This project will be used to demonstrate the use of storage in preventing wind power capacity curtailment on a microgrid. The project, by Shidai Jiahua Co, requires US$680 million in investment and has an expected payback time of 16 to 18 years.

There was also a 160MW local government project in Inner Mongolia, another microgrid to be used for renewables integration. The local authority of Xilin Gol, one of Inner Mongolia’s 12 sub-divided regions, is keen to trial retail sales of electricity from independent suppliers and this project represents a major step forward in this regard.

While these two huge projects are in northwestern regions of China, Jiangsu in the east will get some significant new projects including a 1.5MW/12MWh project from partners including battery maker Narada Power, inverter maker Sungrow and project developer GCL Power, which is an arm of one of China’s biggest PV groups, GCL Poly. Narada Power was also involved in a 15MW/120MWh project in Jiangsu’s Wuxi City Xingzhou Industrial Park.

Overall, renewables integration appears to be the biggest application driver for energy storage in China, as seen in the diagram below. While big announcements were plentiful, only 1.5MW of storage actually came online in Q3, which was nonetheless a 50% increase on the same period of 2015.

Regional reforms, big factories and major investments

CNESA also reported that there have been several rounds of regional-level reforms including the establishment of electricity trading centres, the approval of various reform plans by the National Energy Administration and the start of development of power trading markets in various regions.

There was also major news in terms of production centres for energy storage technologies with Sungrow’s partnership with Samsung SDI expected to reach 100MWh production capacity this year and 500MWh next year. GCL Integrators is also building a large facility, a 500MWh battery factory. GCL is investing US$13 million in that plant.

In terms of significant investments in energy storage reported on by CNESA, Shanghai Electric Power has committed to investing US$870 million in the next three years on 100 to 200 energy storage projects in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. The company will make an even bigger investment in Hubei province, central China, putting in US$4.3 billion for more than 1,000 storage projects over the next five years. Meanwhile lithium-ion battery maker Zhuhai Yinlong Co. was purchased by appliances manufacturer Gree for US$1.8 billion.

Narada received the Green Product Certification Award from SGBC

Narada received a Green product certification award with SGBP Rating of “Very Good” for HTB, REXC and ICS series from SGBC Singapore Green Building Council on 1st June 2016 during Narada partner and appreciation dinner.

The Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP) labelling scheme is widely recognised for it’s holistic and comprehensive approach towards sustainability criteria, drafted by professionals and experts put together by the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) for the industry, by the industry. This grounded methodology enables building products to be impartially evaluated for their relevant, noteworthy qualities, benchmarked against similar products in its category. As a direct result of this emphasis on industrial applicability,the SGBP labelling scheme is recognised under the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) Green Mark Scheme, allowing certified products to accrue additional points that count towards a project’s eventual rating.





From 24th to 26th May 2016, The CIBF 2016 was held in Shenzhen (The 6th China International Energy Storage Conference and the International conference on the Frontier of Advanced Batteries). Narada has signed a big commercial project of energy storage


On 14th April 2016, good news came from Narada, that a project agreement has been signed between Narada and Suzhou Zhongheng energy corporation, about power station of energy storage application, with a storage capacity of total 68.64MWh (2,059MWh power storage per month).

This is a major breakthrough of Narada in commercial storage projects, whose scale has reached a hundred Megawatts and it signifies the company policy of “investment + operation” in storage stations has been successfully performed, which will bring stable cash flow and considerable profit to Narada in following ten years.

The importance of energy storage is highly noticed globally at the present stage, that is the key part to build up “energy internet” and the key entrance of future energy.

On 30th March 2016, the International Conference on Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) was solemnly opened with the theme that to fulfill power requirement globally in clean and green way. The GEI was mainly held by China State Grid, United Nations action on climate change, IEA (International Energy Agency) and EEI (Edison Electric Institute)….etc. with presence of over 600 representatives from government, industrial association and related institutes in more than 26 countries.

The chairman of State Grid, Mr. Liu Zhenya mentioned that: the global energy interconnection consists of grid of ultra-high voltage, smart grid and clean energy, which is an open and shared energy system with low-carbon content, high efficient economy and continuous supply, and is the only path to realize sustainable development for human beings.

The vice general secretary of UN, Mr. Wu Hongbo pointed out that: UN will actively take GEI as an important solution against climate change and organize every related party to improve the development of GEI together.

Narada acquired the quality certificate of ISOTS16949

Narada Power recently has received the quality certificate of ISO/TS 16949:2009 (IATF NO.: 0233914; CASC NO.: 2016A107, Valid from 15th Mar. 2016 to 14th Sep.), issued by China Jiuding Automotive Supplier Certification Co., Ltd. which signifies that Narada got “green passport” to supply batteries to automotive market.

ISO/TS 16949:2009 is the technical specification for international automotive industry, made by IATF (the International Automotive Task Force), based on ISO 9001 standard and according to specialty of automotive industry, with the objective to continuously improve supply-chain development of automotive industry, to emphasize fault prevention, and to reduce waste and deterioration in quality management.

The certificate is mainly about design and manufacture of the lithium-ion battery, which symbolizes that the Lithium products of Narada, design or manufacture process, totally meet the technical specification of ISO standard, that is quite helpful for Narada batteries in the market promotion and competition.

0.3billion RMB Contract with Changan Auto

Hangzhou, China, March 2016 — A few days ago, at 9th March 2016, Narada Power Source Co., Ltd and Chang’an Auto have signed a sales contract with total amount 0.3billion RMB, about lithium-ion battery. Chang’an Auto will purchase LFP batteries from Narada for their electric vehicles.

In year 2015, the EV industry in China has grown tremendously, with total annual turnover of 379 thousands, which is four times than 2014. China is already thelargest EV market. Thanks to national policy and improvement of related infrastructures, the EV market will be enlarged continuously, as a result, high-end customers of lithium battery will also increase, so Narada will get a big chance in bussiness development of lithium battery.

Because of development of li-battery for many years, Narada has totally controlled the key  technology of battery materials, power system as well as dynamical system, and accomplished industrialization of LFP series products for electric vehicles, moreover developed the ternary battery together with its system assembly, which attracts a lot of important EV clients.
