Narada has entered the storage market for frequency regulation in Germany

Recently Narada has signed a contract of cooperation in energy storage with Upside Consulting GmbH (hereinafter referred to as UC) and Upside Invest GmbH & Co.,KG (hereinafter as UI) in order to build, operate and sell a storage system together for service of primary frequency regulation, ratified by transmission operators of German grid, with the initial capacity of 50MW.


It is a mature market for electrical auxiliary service of frequency regulation in Germany with capacity over 3000MW, which can be expanded to 3000MW in entire Europe. The storage system with batteries is with both better social and economic benefits comparing conventional thermodynamic generator, thanks to its specialties of higher speed of response, lower expense and more environment-friendly. Therefore, the storage system with batteries, replying on its advantage in cost and technics, will become more and more popular in market of electrical auxiliary services in Europe.

The service of primary frequency regulation in Germany is weekly offered by bidding in competition, whose average annual revenue of Euro 3000/MW/week in last eight years, with obvious uptrend, consequently, it is getting more and more attractive to various financial investment institutions in Europe, such as investment funds, pension funds…etc.

Upside GmbH is a pioneer in market of primary frequency regulation with battery storage system, whose manager board mainly consists of professional staffs with over 15 years career in renewable energy industry, and quite rich experiences in operation of PV and storage stations. Upside GmbH is also involved in standards-setting for renewable and storage stations in Germany, with developed capacity over 290MW, including 2 station in operation in Brandenburg(1.3MW and 5MW), among which, the 5MW is considered as landmark project of renewable project in new Hardenberg region, financed by state department of economics and energy with 2.85 million Euro. So far, those two storage projects are both in normal operation, involved in frequency regulation service each week, with good working condition and stable revenue.

In following two years, Narada will cooperate with Upside GmbH in construction of storage station over 50MW, with total investment about 42 million Euro, by means of advanced battery technology as well as PCS system, which will be involved in PCR (primary control regulation) service market in Germany. This project will help Narada in deep understand and deep involvement in storage market of frequency regulation, so as to promote energy storage system throughout Germany and even the entire Europe.

As winner of UN Carbon Value Award for outstanding enterprises, Narada was invited to participate in the United Nations poverty alleviation project.

The battery can still maintain a high cycle performance in the environment of up to 40 degree celsius temperature, with 3 times long life of other batteries.



The lighting project, with the total energy storage capacity of 18MWh, has been covering a number of less developed countries and regions. Combining the use of the local abundant solar energy resources and Narada’s high temperature battery, the overall green power supply model benefits a number of poor village tribes, as well as contributes to a substantial increase in the lives of thousands of residents.

On 18th Feb, The Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC) has signed a research program with Narada power on a project of frequency regulation with lead-carbon batteries. Those attenders for the ceremony of signature include: Dr. Boris Monahov (project chairman of ALABC), Dr. David Rand from CSRIO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia), Mr. Chen. Bo (CEO of Narada power), Dr. Wu. Xianzhang (Chief engineer of Narada power), and Dr. Herbert Giess (Chief scientist of Narada power).

This is the second project concerning lead-carbon battery financed by ALABC, concentrating on the performance and internal mechanism of lead-carbon battery under scenarios of frequency regulation and load-tracking, by means of controlling strategy of SOC and management of charging and discharging, so as to improve its performance in energy storage application of power type.

Dr. Boris Monahov has fully affirmed the unremitting efforts made by Narada power to promote technology of lead-carbon battery in energy storage, and he said: this project is quite significant to explore the large storage market of frequency regulation, since it is still a blank part in characteristic research on batteries under such an operational condition.

Dr. Boris Monahov from CSRIO, who is the inventor of lead-carbon battery (ultra-battery), said: the lead-carbon battery was initially developed for hybrid electrical vehicles, while later on Narada has successfully applied it in energy storage, via its self-dependent innovation. Now Narada has totally mastered the core technology in formulation of lead carbon as well as engineering of mass production.

At the end of meeting, CEO Chen. Bo of Narada has signed an agreement of research and development for two years with Dr. Alistair Davidson, who is the product director of ALABC. It can be expected that Narada will master the internal mechanism of lead-carbon battery for power-type, and conquer the bottleneck in storage application for frequency.

On 9th Jan 2017, Narada has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Construction Bank corporation (Zhejiang branch), about fund establishment for Narada storage projects, with purpose of their construction and operation. Since beginning of 2016, Narada has accelerated the commercialization on its storage projects by unique business model of investment + operation, with continuous new system solutions as well as expansion of target clients and market applications. So far, a lot of signed projects have been put into construction and operation.

The fund will be directly invested into construction of storage projects, with initial amount of 5 billion RMB (about 727 million USD dollars). Meanwhile, the decision-making committee will be setup for procedure of investment: project approval, project execution, and capital exit, whose membership will be decided by every investor after joint-consultation. The prior investors will get cashing payment according to the yield rate. The expired project fund can exit by means of procurement, asset securitization or acquisition by listed companies.

The foundation could meet requirement of project construction for Narada in following two to three years, and would be helpful to accelerate market development and expansion in commercialization of storage projects. Narada shall be benefit from the foundation to bring more profit from business performance of future storage projects.

In April 2016, the McGarvies’ family, who live in the Eaglemont of East Melbourne, installed a total energy storage system with a capacity of 14.4 kWh for its own household PV system. All batteries were supplied with 12REXC lead-acid batteries of Narada.

As feed-in tariffs are phased out and grid electricity becomes more expensive in Australia, anyone who has a tool, a battery, just like the McGarvies’ REXC Battery energy storage system, knows that can allow them to store the surplus power during the day and use it at night, it means they’re going to get greater control than they already have over their power bill.


After an energy-intensive winter(from June to August), he said his house has been completely self-sufficient so far October 2016, meaning he owed nothing to his electricity provider after fixed costs.

He expected his house would be powered completely by his solar and Narada battery systems for the remaining nine months of the year.

In addition to the batteries, the system also includes photovoltaic inverters and twenty-four PV modules, and the McGarvies’ paid a cost for the system, a cost he acknowledged maybe was beyond the budget of several households. But he was also confident of the future, and predicted: Within ten years of Narada batteries lifespan, with the progress of science and technology, photovoltaic energy storage system will enter into thousands of families; especially for those who have installed the on-grid system, they will be the best customer base for energy storage systems.

Hangzhou, China, January, 2017 January 12th, Narada and Hangzhou Zhongheng Electric Co., Ltd successfully won the tender of Energy storage and equipment procurement for Data Center project of China Mobile. A Leader in Commercialization of Energy Storage Application

On August 30th, 2016, a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (1st Phase: 1.5MW/12MWh) which was designed and constructed by Narada Power for a Chinese silicon industry company has successfully been put into service. It is the first commercialized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in China.


In this project, Narada has been acted as an EPC to provide overall design, procurement, construction and system integration service, and the project is finally put into service after 8 months construction and commissioning. Narada has also been engaged to provide a series of services including electricity consumption management, operation and maintenance afterwards. The completion of this project marked that Narada has the leading position in commercialization of energy storage power station, especially in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The Energy Storage System (ESS) is one of the key technologies applies to Smart Grid, Distributed Generation, Renewable Energy Integration, Micro-grid, as well as development of Electric Vehicles. In large-scale renewable power generation, ESS is applied to peak-shaving to smooth the variable and intermittent power output; In the side of “behind-the-meter”, ESS can be used to improve reliability of electricity provision by shifting peak demand to off-peak period, which has changed the mode of traditional power system, and it has efficiently decreased the peak capacity of generators and increased the utilization of generators; In the side of Transmission and Distribution lines, ESS has largely improved the acceptance ability of renewables integration, and it has facilitated the renewables development and utilization intensively.

By the end of 2016, Narada has already completed and contracted BESS for over 800MWh totally, and mainly applying to peak-shaving for enterprise application, frequency regulation for utility-scale, as well as renewable energy integration. Besides of the first commercialized BESS mentioned above, Narada is now working on the largest BESS for industrial park in China, with total 15MW/120MWh installation capacity, that helps to save around 32.4 million RMB annually in power consumption for the industrial park. On the other hand, Narada also provides storage system of frequency regulation for both solar farm in Canada and Indian national grid.

Recently, the 2016 Future of Energy APAC Summit, organized by Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization and Bloomberg New Energy Finance, was convened on the future of energy, covering three themes: trade, technology, and the transition to a lower-carbon energy system over two days of discussion, debate, and discovery in Shanghai. More than 400 representives from international organizations, government agencies, universities, research institutes and enterprises, participated in this pageant.

On the second day of the summit, the organizer invited industry experts and related manufacturers to participate in round-table discussions on energy storage and battery-related issues. Narada was awarded in Australian Annual Energy Storage Summit

With support of the Victoria Government, the Australian Clean Energy Council and Australian Power Grid Companies, the 7th Australian Energy Conference was inaugurated in Melbourne Pullman Hotel on October 11th, 2016.


As the most influential summit of the energy storage industry in Australia, the two-days conference brought together more than 200 energy storage distributors, integrators, battery manufacturers, inverter manufacturers, as well as Australian local governments, power grid companies, associations and research institutions and the media from Australia and China.

China announced nearly 600MW of energy storage in Q3 2016

China’s deployment of energy storage looks set to continue an upward trajectory, with almost 600MW in the pipeline as of the third quarter this year.

According to figures released by the China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA), 14 new projects were announced in Q3 2016 totalling 587MW. This includes projects that are in planning stages, under construction and that have gone online in the quarter. This appears to represent a significant boost to the sector, and is a vast 586% increase on the same period of last year. Up until the beginning of the quarter, CNESA found, 170.6MW of energy storage was in operation in the country.

The bulk of this large figure is contributed by a single project, a touted 400MW supercapacitor storage station with storage duration of four hours in Guazhou County, in the northern Gansu province, a couple of hundred kilometres south of the border with Mongolia. This project will be used to demonstrate the use of storage in preventing wind power capacity curtailment on a microgrid. The project, by Shidai Jiahua Co, requires US$680 million in investment and has an expected payback time of 16 to 18 years.

There was also a 160MW local government project in Inner Mongolia, another microgrid to be used for renewables integration. The local authority of Xilin Gol, one of Inner Mongolia’s 12 sub-divided regions, is keen to trial retail sales of electricity from independent suppliers and this project represents a major step forward in this regard.

While these two huge projects are in northwestern regions of China, Jiangsu in the east will get some significant new projects including a 1.5MW/12MWh project from partners including battery maker Narada Power, inverter maker Sungrow and project developer GCL Power, which is an arm of one of China’s biggest PV groups, GCL Poly. Narada Power was also involved in a 15MW/120MWh project in Jiangsu’s Wuxi City Xingzhou Industrial Park.

Overall, renewables integration appears to be the biggest application driver for energy storage in China, as seen in the diagram below. While big announcements were plentiful, only 1.5MW of storage actually came online in Q3, which was nonetheless a 50% increase on the same period of 2015.

Regional reforms, big factories and major investments

CNESA also reported that there have been several rounds of regional-level reforms including the establishment of electricity trading centres, the approval of various reform plans by the National Energy Administration and the start of development of power trading markets in various regions.

There was also major news in terms of production centres for energy storage technologies with Sungrow’s partnership with Samsung SDI expected to reach 100MWh production capacity this year and 500MWh next year. GCL Integrators is also building a large facility, a 500MWh battery factory. GCL is investing US$13 million in that plant.

In terms of significant investments in energy storage reported on by CNESA, Shanghai Electric Power has committed to investing US$870 million in the next three years on 100 to 200 energy storage projects in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. The company will make an even bigger investment in Hubei province, central China, putting in US$4.3 billion for more than 1,000 storage projects over the next five years. Meanwhile lithium-ion battery maker Zhuhai Yinlong Co. was purchased by appliances manufacturer Gree for US$1.8 billion.
