Bloomberg: Narada has the second largest energy storage capacity in 2017

Recently, Bloomberg released the global ranking of 2017 energy storage battery vendors based on the database of energy storage projects of Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

BNEF has tracked a total of 1.6GW operating grid class energy storage project since 2015. Its proprietary energy storage database has at time of publishing over 1,600 projects.

The report specifically mentions that Narada had a successful year deploying its long-duration lead-carbon technology for large commercial & industrial applications in 2017. The most meaningful project is the Germany PCR project which has completed the first phase for 10MW, and the completion of the overall project will be completed by the end of this year.

Narada is one of the few companies in the world that has mastered the core technologies of lead-carbon and lithium-ion batteries. Through the exploration of commercial energy storage by Narada, it has been clarified that the application of electrochemical energy storage has matured in terms of scale, safety, economy, etc., and has formed a large-scale application.

Herbert Giess strongly recommended lead-carbon technology in energy storage industry

Recently,Herbert Giess , who was recognized for his contribution to the lead and lead battery industries with International Lead Award at the Asian Battery Conference in Kuala Lumpur last year, received the interview with Batteries International.

Herbert Giess was the chairman of the International Electrotechnical Standardization Organization IEC/TC21. And he is the constitutor of the IEC 60896-21/22 VRLA battery international standard and the IEC 61427 energy storage international standard. He has served as executive chairman of the International Lead Acid Battery Conference many times.

Mr.Giess mentioned that lead-acid batteries can be used as a competitive solution in large-scale energy storage systems. And Mr.Giess is working with Narada on an ALABC project using the IEC61427-2 methodology to measure the performance of lead batteries and will present data that illustrate its strengths and weak spots and ultimately indicate that it can be very suitable.

He said, the main producer of lithium-ion cells, energy storage projects more commonly use lead batteries. One of the reasons of this is that some companies have developed VRLA/AGM type lead batteries capable of delivering many more 100%DoD cycles—around 1500 compared with the standard 300-800 typical of a battery used in Europe and the US.

What’s more, Narada has developed the REX-C battery, a carbon modified VRLA/AGM that is able to achieve good cycle life in the partial state of charge.

Lead acid battery, for many energy storage applications, is simply the better option and is more affordable.

The progress of Germany PCR project

In April, people passed through the Leipzig discovered some containers were built on a vast plain. These containers were the energy storage plants built by Narada for Germany’s PCR project.

In 2017, Narada signed a contract with Upside German to build the FM energy storage station with a total capacity of more than 50MW and participated in PCR in Germany.

The use of renewable energy in Germany ranks the world leader. At present, 33% of Germany’s electricity demand comes from the renewable energy. According to German “Energy Transformation”, the use of renewable energy will be more than 80%.

With the increase of renewable energy power generation, especially solar and wind, its intermittent and unpredictability lead to short-term deviations in power supply and demand, resulting in instability in the quality of power grid operation, especially in frequency fluctuations. The demand for frequency regulation on the grid will accelerate.

Compared with traditional thermal power plant frequency modulation, battery energy storage system has better economic and social benefits because of its high-frequency regulation efficiency, fast response, relatively low cost, and more environment-friendly features.

During the construction of the project, Narada dispatched personnel to the project construction site several times to conduct professional installation guidance.

The General Manager of Narada overseas and EPC Engineering Division Zheng Yan introduced that the total construction capacity of the entire project is 50MW, which is completed in three phases. The first phase of the project will be completed in June, and the completion of the overall project will be completed by the end of this year.

Narada has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with National Energy Marine Nuclear Power Platform Technology R&D Center to cooperate in the fields of marine nuclear power platform national special projects, integrated energy services, and national science and technology projects a few days ago.

National Energy Marine Nuclear Power Platform Technology R&D Center is the first state-level marine nuclear power platform technology R&D center in China. The center researches the important technical issues of marine nuclear power platform.

Marine nuclear power platform is essentially a mobile and miniaturized application of nuclear power plants, which can provide great help to the supply of electricity, heat, fresh water, etc. in the offshore islands.

We hope to sign a cooperation agreement to build a platform for comprehensive deepening of cooperation between the two sides, jointly develop scientific research, integrated energy service application and promotion, and market development to achieve industrial technology upgrading.

The cooperation project will help both of us jointly promote the research and development of the national nuclear power platform for the sea, establish and improve the marine nuclear energy industry system, promote industrial development, and help both parties to develop and increase efficiency. China’s leading energy storage manufacturer and developer, Narada Power Source Co. Ltd., with a 30% growth in 2017, the total revenue in 2017 was 8.637Billion yuan(US$1.376 billion) The net profit stood at 381 million yuan, up 16% compared with that of 2016.

Narada’s battery business contributed 5.174 billion yuan, among those the growth rate of stationary power, energy storage power & systems, and motive power & systems was 10.38%, 9.59%, and 33.27% respectively.

Narada first started out as a battery manufacturer and retailer and now has made significant inroads in providing systems solutions and operation services for power generation, storage and recycling, forming an industrial chain. Narada has acquired 49% equity in Huabo Technology, a leading player in China’s battery recycling industry. It is expected that the capacity of Huabo Technology in lead battery recycling will exceed one million tons in the future.

According to the annual report, the energy storage project build by Narada in Wuxi Singapore Industrial Park with a capacity of 160MWh, was the first example of electrochemical energy storage system providing electric power ancillary services in China, was put into operation and participated in the power demand side response service for Jiangsu province in February 2018.

Narada’s leap from the industrial and commercial customer side to renewable energy generation was marked when Narada successfully put Qinghai Huaneng Integrated Photovoltaic Energy Storage Station into operation.

Narada not only invested in powertrain system projects to enhance the integration capacity of new energy vehicles but have also tapped into the oversea motive battery market with sealed deals in the Netherlands, UK, and Thailand. The revenue of a motive battery for electric bicycles have increased 57.94% annually.

The annual report also shows solid development in Narada’s R&D sector. By the end of 2017, it held 104 valid patents, including 45 for inventions, 41 for utility models and 18 for exterior designs. The revenue from R&D accounted for 3.03% of the total.
